Is it Possible to Play Better Golf With No Practice?

I, like most golfers, am always looking to play better, beat my mates and get bragging rights. I have a lifestyle that is pretty hectic and spend a lot of time with my family. I have two boys and we are a soccer mad family. I coach one of my boys teams and my other son plays twice a week as well. So you can see I don't get any time to perfect my golf at all.

Recently I have been managing about a game every 4 weeks and absolutely no practice, so I have been in search of a way to help me enjoy my game with no practice, so I researched and investigated and came up with 2 things that I could do with out too much bother.

Course management
pitching and Chipping strategy

Course management I decided that I would concentrate on choosing the right kind of shot at the right time, then I would definitely get better scores. The golf course that I play at has loads of bunkers on every green, and I figured that if I went for the green with my approach shots that I would either be on the green or in a bunker. Now depending on how far out from the green I was also had a bearing on my shot. I decided that for any shot requiring more than a 9 iron I would actually play short/lay up and take my chances with my chipping and putting. As part of that decision process was also where to lay up to to give me the best angle to chip on to the green.

So my simple course management technique was really to avoid the bunkers at all costs and give myself a chance of an up and down from a green side chip.

Unless you can hit the ball from where you are onto the green at least 7 times out of 10 then you would be better off playing short.

pitching and Chipping Strategy

I read the following tip recently

"You can vary the distance of your chips by using different clubs - try using your 5 iron, 7 iron or 9 iron and only ONE SWING instead of using your Sand Wedge and 3 different swings."

Basically, the secret is to have the same length backswing, but use a different club to ship the ball either longer or shorter, and I adapted it to have two swings.

Well that made sense to me so before my round started, I thought I would do a little scientific research, so I went to the practice area and played chips with 2 different swings

Swing #1 Take the club back about 18 inches behind my back foot. The key is to go back the same distance every time

Swing #2 Takes the club back parallel to the ground

I spent 15 minutes testing out how far the ball went with each club using swing number 1 from my 5 iron up to my lob wedge to get a feel for the distance covered in the air and the total distance I then repeated the exercise using swing number 2 I also used a simple setup routine for chipping and putting (you can get this set up routine from my website TheGolfHelper.com

Now I didn't change any other part of my game, and just applying these simple methods improved my game without any practice (well actually about 15 minutes practice on the chipping range!)

As I said before these 2 things were the key to me winning our club A grade competition, and all done with 2 very simple techniques that anyone can do without remodeling your swing or taking a lesson, so that should give you some food for thought!

Ten Symptoms Texans Should Not Ignore

Everyone in dallas, Houston and throughout the rest of texas feels an occasional symptom or two from flu, cold, allergy or whatever is going around. But, when the symptoms become persistent, they could even become life threatening. Individuals who feel chest or abdominal pain, or experience unexplained bleeding, should seek immediate medical care. There are other symptoms that are less well known which, if you develop them, you should seek immediate medical care. Here are 10 symptoms that you should not ignore:

1. unexplained weight loss
Experiencing a 5% weight loss in a month, or a 10% weight loss within 6-12 months, could be a symptom of a number of different conditions, including an over-active thyroid, depression, liver disease, cancer or other non-cancerous disorders which might interfere with how your body absorbs nutrients.

2. Persistent fever
Registering a persistent low-grade fever of more than 100.4 F should be evaluated if it lasts for a week or more. A low-grade fever can signal an underlying infection. Some cancers and other medical conditions can cause prolonged, persistent fever. A fever accompanied by violent chills, or higher than 103 F, should be evaluated right away.

3. Shortness of breath
Gasping for air or wheezing are medical emergencies. Causes can vary widely and can include asthma, heart problems, anxiety, panic attacks, or a blood clot in the lungs.

4. unexplained changes in bowel habits
Bowel habit changes may signal a bacterial or viral infection, inflammatory bowel disease or, at the extreme, colon cancer. Seek medical attention for any of the following:
-Severe diarrhea lasting more than two days
-Mild diarrhea lasting a week
-Constipation that lasts for more than two weeks
-Unexplained urges to have a bowel movement
-Bloody diarrhea
-Black or tarry-colored stools

5. Mental status changes
Changes in behavior or thinking may be due to infection, head injury, stroke, low blood sugar or medications. Immediate medical care should be sought for any of the following:
-Sudden or gradual confused thinking
-Disorientation
-Sudden aggressive behavior
-Hallucinations

6. New or more-severe headaches -- especially for individuals over the age of 50. Seek immediate medical attention for:
-A sudden and severe headache, often called a thunderclap headache, because it comes on suddenly like a clap of thunder
-A headache accompanied by a fever, stiff neck, rash, mental confusion, seizure, vision changes, weakness, numbness, speaking difficulties, scalp tenderness or pain with chewing. Causes for headaches considered medical emergencies may include stroke, blood vessel inflammation, meningitis, brain tumor, aneurysm or bleeding on the brain after head trauma.

7. Short-term loss of vision, speaking, movement or control
With these symptoms, minutes count because they indicate the possibility of a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Seek immediate medical attention for any of the following:
-Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm, leg on one side of the body
-Sudden dimness, blurring or loss of vision
-Loss of speech, or trouble talking or understanding speech
-A sudden or severe headache
-Sudden dizziness, unsteadiness or a fall

8. Flashes of light
The sudden sensation of flashing lights may signal the beginning of retinal detachment. Seek immediate medical care to save vision in the affected eye.

9. Feeling full after eating very little
Feeling full sooner than normal after eating a meal, or feeling persistent nausea or vomiting for a week, might indicate possible gastrointestinal disorders, pancreatic cancer, stomach cancer or ovarian cancer.

10. Hot, red or swollen joints
These warning signs can indicate a joint infection, which requires emergency care to save the joint and prevent the spread of bacteria. Other causes could include gout or certain types of arthritis.

Do you own a Playstation 3? I Do. And I absolutely love this game machine. In fact, I love it so much that I put my good old trusty Playstation 2 system up for sale and sold it. Mind you, I'm keeping all of my favorite games, because they can be played on the PS3 as well. Especially the two player games that I play often with friends. Thankfully I had several ps2 controllers (4 to be exact) and decided to only sell two of them with my Playstation 2 console. I figured I could use my ps2 controllers on my Playstation 3, and not have to spend another $50.00 on an extra controller.

Now, I did of course know that the Playstation 3 controllers were not the same as the Playstation 2. While they do have their SIXAXIS wireless controllers, they also have SIXAXIS wired Playstation 3 controllers as well. However, these use a usb port in order to be able to plug into the controller ports on the Playstation 3. This did present a problem, because the Playstation 2 controllers do not have a usb plug, but a unique plug that's specific to the ps2 console.

However, having reviewed and written about video games and video game accessories for many years now, and watched as innovative companies designed and developed what are called controller adapters for essentially every single video game console on the market, I was certain that it was only a matter of time before a Playstation 2 to Playstation 3 controller adapter would be released. And boy was I right. Not even 3 months after the release of the Playstation 3, the ps2 to PS3 Controller adapter started showing up on video game web sites.

The Playstation 2 to Playstation 3 controller adapter is an adapter for Playstation 2 controllers. About 3 to 6 feet long, depending on which model you buy. Not only does the ps2 to PS3 controller adapter save you money, and make use of your now unused Playstation 2 controllers, you'll also be able to play your ps2 games just the same as you would on your Playstation 2 console, with all of the rumble and force feedback that would be lacking if you were playing your Playstation 2 games with a Playstation 3 controller.

The controller adapter is a quick and easy way to use your Playstation 2 controllers on your Playstation 3. And above all, it's extremely cheap. priced at under $10.00, it's certainly much cheaper than going out and buying another Playstation 3 controller. In fact, you could buy up to 4 adapters, and make use of all of the Playstation 3 controller ports, and use ps2 controllers in all of them. Once again, there is a technology format war looming on the horizon. Many people dont remember the VHS - Betamax battle that broke out when video players were first introduced, making it possible for people to watch movies at home. This was a case of two non-compatible technologies, each of which was a format for taping full length feature films. Ultimately VHS won out, and the movie companies put out their products in that format thus dooming Betamax and the product manufacturers that had adopted their technology, not to mention the thousands of consumers that had invested in Betamax players. We now find ourselves on the verge of creating a new set of sore losers.

Skirmishes over LCD versus plasma screen HD TV technology are ongoing, but that type of technology contest isnt as acute because you can watch TV or a movie on either type of screen. Currently, you can also play every DVD available on any DVD player that is in production and on the market. The next generation of DVD players, however, is coming over the horizon in the form of two distinct and incompatible technologies.

Toshiba versus Sony

Toshiba has developed a proprietary technology dubbed high definition DVD (HDDVD) and to support their format has developed alliances with microsoft and Universal Films, among others. The HDDVD disks will be available in 15GB and two sided, 30GB versions.

By way of comparison, the current DVDs have enough storage for two hours of standard definition (SD) images, while the one-sided 15 gigabyte HDDVD disk can store up to eight hours of high definition (HD) images. The difference between SD and HD is simply twice the number of pixel lines displayed on the screen in the HD format, thus providing a crisper picture. The increased capacity of these disks will also allow for interactive features such as screen-in-screen directors discussion of movie scenes playing behind him that todays standard DVDs cannot support.

In the other corner is the Blu-Ray technology developed by Sony, who has lined up support from Apple, Disney and 20th Century Fox. Both formats use blue laser technology, which has a shorter wavelength than red, allowing it to read the smaller digital data "spots" packed a lot more densely onto a standard-size disc. Blu-Ray disks are designed to carry up to 50GB of digital material, which may mean that Sony wins the compression competition.

The Early Rounds

Sony Pictures released the first six films on Blu-Ray disks in June of this year, and have released a few more since. Samsung has a Blu-Ray DVD player in the stores, while Sonys hardware division has released a Blu-Ray compatible PC. Toshiba has its initial HDDVD player on the market and there are a limited number of titles available in the format, mostly re-releases of previous first-run features.

Sony clearly jumped out to an early lead, with support from Dell, HP, Mitsubishi and a number of other hardware manufacturers. In addition, Sony Pictures also owns Columbia and MGM, giving them an enormous library to work with. Sony will also fold its technology into the PlayStation 3 gaming machine, their proprietary product whose 2nd version rules the roost in the videogame market.

On the Toshiba side of the battlefield, proponents argue that the HDDVD disks will be cheaper to produce and that it will be comparatively easy for disk replicators to retrofit their equipment for production purposes. The HDDVD format also makes production of recordable DVDs much simpler than with the Blu-Ray design.

Further, an alliance with microsoft will be a formidable edge in this battle, should it turn into a protracted conflict. Microsofts operating systems are going to be important cogs in the development of future home viewing systems, as the technology moves closer to merging the functions of computers and televisions. If movie downloads become a commercial success, PC compatibility will be critical for these disks.

The Consumer Issues

One of the reasons that microsoft aligned with Toshibas technology is that HDDVD provides for mandatory managed copy. What that means is that unlike with today's conventional DVDs, managed copy allows consumers to make legitimate copies of their HD movies and enjoy this content around the home or across their personal networks. Making this feature mandatory will ensure a consistent consumer experience across all next-generation DVD content.

Then there is the element of iHD, which is the concept of maximizing high definition video for transport across the internet. This is a specific set of video specs which the iHD.org, a group of tech and media companies, is pushing as a cross-platform standard.

The theory is that next-generation HD movies will provide a level of interactive experience well beyond that of today's conventional DVDs. iHD technology is meant to provide a broad foundation to enable new interactivity with standards-based development tools and technologies.

The pitch for this standard is that it will provide consumers with enhanced content, navigation and functionality for HD films. The business reality is that microsoft plans to implement iHD support in its Windows Vista operating system, which will not only be a significant step towards integrated video and computer systems but will make help drive adoption of the new microsoft platform.

Duel to the Death Unlikely

There is some indication that all of these conflicting issues may ultimately force a compromise some sort of merger or unification of the two technologies. hardware manufacturers are hedging their bets, with the latest wrinkle being that Blu-Ray-aligned Hewlett Packard has requested that mandatory managed copy and the iHD standard be included in Blu-Rays feature set. Sony has agreed to include the managed copy feature, but said no to iHD.

The Betamax VHS battle was a tussle over hardware with the movie companies playing a predominant role, one Sony lost. This time around, there is much more uncertainty about how the next generation of home video will roll out. How will the Web and the PC fit in? Will the movies be delivered via disk or via download? How will the film industry protect its content rights and how can the hardware companies maximize their role?

PCs have become a commodity. If a scenario arises where every household needs a new computer to match up with new video technology, the Dells and HPs of this world stand to win big. If competing technology keeps people from investing in either, every involved business will suffer. If the film and DVD houses have to produce two sets of content and two disks for every film, their margins will grow considerably thinner as well. The tech bloggers seem to be increasingly inclined to believe that unification of some sort is inevitable. The corporations with the most to lose are too smart not to insist on it.

For many people, yoga brings to mind an image of a man transformed into the shape of a pretzel. In fact, yoga is a practice which has been developing for thousands of years, and there are new types of yoga springing fourth generation after generation. One of the new types of yoga to emerge recently is Bikram yoga, and herein we will discuss what sets this yoga practice apart, and also the many benefits of Bikram Yoga practice.

In Calcutta, 1946, Bikram Choudhury was born. It was quickly evident that he was a Yoga prodigy, and he began the formal study of Yoga at age four with acclaimed instructor Bishnu Ghosh. After several years of study, he won the National india Yoga Contest at the tender age of thirteen. At the age of seventeen an event occurred that transformed his life. While weight lifting, he had an accident and injured his knee badly. He was told that he would never walk again. Not to be deterred, he insisted on being transported back to his childhood teacher. Within six months he was completely healed, and this was the first documentation that Yoga could cure serious physical conditions. In 1974 he moved to California and founded the Yoga college of india in Beverly Hills. It was here that Bikram developed his unique Yoga program.

Before detailing what makes Bikram's Yoga different, it may be wise to consider the purpose of Yoga. Yoga comes from the same root as the English word "Yoke" and can be translated as "Union". Hence, Yoga is really about the Union of mind, body, and spirit. Bikram's Yoga is a type of hatha Yoga which concentrates on the physical, or "body," element of this equation.

One difference of Bikram Yoga is that it is performed in a very hot room, usually heated between 95 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. It consists of Twenty-Six asanas (poses) that are performed in a specific order. While most Yoga classes differ from session to session, in Bikram Yoga the same asanas are followed in the same order each session. Each asana is held for a particular period of time and all poses are accompanied with Kapalabhati Breath (Breath of Fire). There are also two Pranayama (Breathing) exercises that are performed each session. The combination of the hot room, the special breathing, and the scientific approach to Bikram Yoga bring us to the benefits it can bring to Mind, body, and spirit.

If you have ever performed Yoga before, you will know that there is an intense tightness in the muscles in the morning and at the beginning of your session. However, the heat of the Bikram Yoga studio, along with the "Breath of Fire" actually warms the muscles, tendons, and ligaments, and allows you to go deeper into a pose. When you learned to write, you trained the muscles in your arm and hand to create letters. It took time and concentration to do this, but with repetition it became automatic. Your hand developed muscle memory; when you write your name, your muscles remember how to move without focusing on the process.

Dancing, yoga, gymnastics and weight training are examples of other activities that require enhanced muscle memory. We can make the learning process easier and help establish muscle memory by using a few simple techniques:

* Visual images
* Repetition
* Slow motion
* Micromovement

Imagery

Using a visual image is an effective way to train your body to perform a new dance step or exercise. The best visual images are those which are familiar and detailed.

In dance, visualizing a movement helps you perform the step. For example, if a dancer wants to make an S-curving motion with her body, she can visualize a fish swimming, a camel walking, or a snake crawling. Since the best visual images are familiar and detailed, visualizing the color, texture, shape and markings of the image make it more vivid and effective. Likewise, visualizing yourself correctly repeating a new dance step or exercise makes the learning process easier.

many people find geometric shapes helpful. For example, you can imagine drawing a big circle to make learning a belly dance hip circle or circle step easier. A square is a useful image for learning a box step or hip square.

Repetition & slow motion

Repetition helps fix a new exercise or dance movement in your mind, so that the next time you perform it, you remember it more easily and perform it with less effort. Slow repetitions of a new exercise or dance step enable you to feel every nuance of the movement.

Rushing through a movement before youve completely mastered it skips over the important process of sensing every nuance of the movement; beginning dance students and exercisers often need to be reminded to slow down. Going slowly helps your muscles recognize precisely what the movement should feel like when performed correctly.

Micromovement

Micromovement means performing a movement in a very tiny way, using the least range of motion possible. For example, if you were writing the letter O ten inches high and then writing o in a script so tiny it could barely be seen, your O would require a much larger hand movement than tiny letter o, the micromovement. Using a tiny range of motion helps you sense subtle muscle movements which are occurring, but micromovements must be performed with awareness to get the full benefit. Going slowly helps.

Imagery: what animal, shape or object does it remind you of?
Repetition: what kind of music would help you when practicing this movement?
Slow motion: how many counts does it take you to complete one repetition?

meditation is healthy, safe and affordable. In fact its free. The only expense youll have is a meditation mat, which isnt especially necessary-at least from my experience. meditation has been around for 5,000 years, and was originally a spiritual component of yoga. Through the years non-yogis adopted it, intuitively sensing and connecting the practice with greater peace of mind. Personally, I cant say enough good things about meditation. Its use has rewarded me with less worry and much more energy. But Ive never been one for anecdotal evidence. Lets get to the science

Transcendental meditation

Recently, theres an incredible amount of science tied into the benefits of meditation. The studies are endless and cover a variety of meditative practices. On Transcendental meditation alone (mantra repetition) there are over 500 studies. Some are more noteworthy that others. A study in the Japanese Journal of Public Health found that through Transcendental meditation, industrial workers sleep improved and their smoking decreased. Another study conducted at the MERU Research institute, in Buckinghamshire, England found that the length of time practicing the Transcendental meditation and TM-Sidhi program correlated with younger biological age and younger functional age.

mindfulness Meditation

mindfulness meditation, which asks us to focus on our breath to facilitate awareness of the present moment, is another widely studied meditation technique. After studying the effects of 8-weeks of mindfulness meditation on participants, a 2003 report in the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine concluded: A short program in mindfulness meditation produces demonstrable effects on brain and immune function. Impressive, but fairly vague. To get a more committed response to the benefits of meditation we have to turn to Taiwan. In 2002 their journal Chang Gung Medicine reported that training in MM may be a medically superior and cost-effective alternative to pain medication for the control of headaches with no underlying organic causes in highly motivated patients.

What causes these positive physical changes? To answer this, other research has looked at the specifics of what happens in the body during meditation. . Researchers at the Maharishi school of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, found that meditation has an enormous impact on stress reduction. When they examined a group who had meditated for four months they saw that they produced less of the stress hormone cortisol. They were therefore better able to adapt to stress in their lives, no matter what their circumstances were.

Having balanced cortisol levels is essential to mental and emotional health. Notice I say balanced rather than none. We dont want to completely eliminate cortisol. If we did wed be dead. Even low cortisol levels can be dangerous. Not enough cortisol is the identifying trait of Addisons disease. John F. Kennedy had this condition, which he denied passionately during his presidency. Yet during his term he regulated his levels through hydrocortisone (synthetic cortisol). The reverse of JFKs condition is called Cushings Syndrome.

The five most common and noticeable changes of this condition include; red face and puffy cheeks; excess fat surrounding the collar bones, muscle weakness, and hypertension. But we dont have to have Cushings Syndrome to be damaged by extra cortisol. The changes we experience may be subtle variations of these. Plus, the changes caused by excess cortisol are age dependent. Young people may stop growing and teenagers can develop acne. The mature among us arent safe either. Since excess cortisol damages bone-tissue those over age 60 may develop fractures related to osteoporosis. So its evident that if we can regulate cortisol, especially through a natural process, we owe it to ourselves to try.

Regina Drueding, MD, is a meditation instructor at Life Circles in Utah, USA. She quotes the benefits of meditation as follows: more energy, improved quality of sleep, decreased anxiety, lessened chronological aging, improved concentration, improved visual acuity, increased alertness and heightened immunity. She writes: Besides the benefits mentioned earlier, meditation results in improvement of hypertension, sleep disorders, headaches, heartrhythm disturbances, chronic pain pain due to cancer, infertility and irritable bowel syndrome. How to Meditate

Meditation is both simple and complex. Its like defining the color orange: When you see it you know it. Similarly, the experience of meditation is best, wellexperienced. In an article in New View magazine, Shippensburg Universitys Dr. C. George Boeree describes the basics of Buddhist meditation. In summary, the beginners technique is as follows:

1. Sit or kneel comfortably.

2. The hands are loose and open with the palms up, one atop the other and thumbs lightly touching.

3. Head is upright. Eyes may be closed or open. If open they should focus on your hands or a spot nearby.

4. Beginning meditators should count upwards to ten on each exhale. Breathe in a relaxed and natural way. Then begin again at one and repeat. Continue to breathe naturally.

5. Continue for 15 minutes.

In my personal experience, I dont find that the specific length of time is as important as repetition and persistence. To paraphrase, 10 minutes daily beats 15 minutes once a week. This brings me to another point: We all have different personalities and as such, different meditation approaches suit some more than others. Thankfully there are many varieties of meditation. Some varieties have sub-varieties.

mindfulness meditation is one of these versatile practices. Perhaps its because its essence-awareness of the present moment-is so versatile. mindfulness in our daily life can be practiced by slowing down and attending to our surroundings. What are our 5 senses telling us? We can use mindfulness in the middle of a hectic day, such as paying attention to our breathing when stopped at a traffic light. We can also use other everyday events as triggers for mindfulness. Buckling your seatbelt? Make this a reminder to return to the present. Really think about what youre doing and the details of the experience.

The more traditional may benefit from a more formal mindfulness practice. You may sit in the identical form as in traditional Buddhist meditation- on a chair or kneeling. However, you may also sit with your legs crossed. Your eyes are closed and your posture is both straight and relaxed while your head remains upright. Focus on your breath and allow mental chatter to float by without regard. Thoughts, emotions and sensations will come, but dont be influenced by them. Keep focused on your breath. If you are getting involved with your thoughts dont worry-your efforts arent destroyed. The key thing is to bring your attention back to breathing and continue. This can go on for 5 minutes to 5 hours. Its up to you.

Transcendental Meditation is another popular form of meditation. Generally, this type is practiced twice daily for a period of 15-20 minutes. Again, this technique involves sitting comfortably. Yet in contrast to basic Buddhist the eyes stay closed. Each student is given a mantra and is instructed to induce relaxation through use of this mantra. Since many of either cant or wont go to a formal TM class, a no-fail mantra I recommend is the classic OM. In The Heart of Yoga, T.K.V Desikachar writes that repetition of "OM" enables us to maintain mental and emotional calmness, overcome obstacles and enable understanding. It is the shortest of the mantras, and is said to be suggestive of God. If youre uncomfortable with the religious aspects of OM I suggest a word that has positive meaning for you, such as love, calm or peace. Calm is an ideal substitute, since vocally it resembles OM.

Final Word

You may never, ever choose to meditate. Yet if this is your choice it may be valuable to question why. For a long time I was reluctant because of images of the dropout hippie 60s. Yet when I tried it the experience overcame my reservations. If you try it the same may happen to you. If it doesnt you havent lost any money, and youve gained a new experience.

The Stack and Tilt Golf Swing - Some Comments

In a recent issue of golf digest (June 2007) a "new" golf swing being promoted by golf coaches Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett is featured. This new approach to the golf swing is called the "Stack and Tilt" swing.

In describing the Stack and Tilt swing, Peter Morrice, the author of the article, indulges in a bit of overstatement when he says "Their secret...contradicts almost everything being taught in the game today." But is this swing really that unique?

The Key Difference

The biggest difference with the "Stack and Tilt" swing is that it completely downplays the idea of shifting your weight to your back foot when making the backswing. In fact this "new" swing encourages the golfer to keep his or her weight on the front foot, and, if anything, move it more directly over the front foot during the takeaway.

Some older golfers will think this looks like a "reverse pivot" where the golfer seems to be leaning towards the target at the top of the swing. Teachers of the typical modern swing have their golf students draw the club back and stack their weight over their back leg when the club hits the top of the swing. But Stack and Tilt encourages the golfer to lean towards the target while the club is taken up.

Some Subtle Differences

For many golfers it may be hard to spot the differences at first, but there are some significant ones. For one thing with the typical modern swing the back leg remains bent with a slight flex at the knee. With the Stack and Tilt the back leg straightens out. The photos featured in the golf digest article (p.122) demonstrate how the back leg straightens out as it pushes back towards the target.

As a result the front side of the body is "stacked" over the front foot, and the trailing side of the body is "tilted" towards the target.

For a comparison with the typical modern swing look at photos of Tiger's swing of the last few years, or see the photo of V.J. Singh's swing on page 43 of the same issue of golf digest. Singh's upper body is "stacked" over his back leg at the top of the swing, and the trailing side of his torso is perpendicular to the ground as he pushes his weight back over his back leg. This is quite different from the way the torso is angled towards the target with the Stack and Tilt swing.

It's All Been Done Before

If you are familiar with the teachings of most modern golf coaches this may sound like a radical departure from golf orthodoxy. But the fact is, there have always been alternative schools of thought which questioned the simplistic "weight shift" idea. In particular, look at old photos of Jack nicklaus, Ben hogan or Sam snead. None of these golfers make the major shift over the back leg like you see with tiger Woods, for instance.

Or have a close look at the famous 1930s videos produced by Bobby Jones. There is no obvious shift towards the back leg. Jones remains centered over the ball throughout the swing and is more concerned with rotation around the center point than he is with the lateral weight shift characteristic of the typical modern swing.

Points of Interest

There are clearly some aspects of the Stack and Tilt swing that may help the average golfer hit the golf ball more squarely and more precisely.

The first is the lack of emphasis placed on the weight shift. For many golfers this idea is misleading and results in a lateral shift that basically turns the golf ball into a moving target. Shifting one's weight to the back also results in a "shallower" swing which increases the chances of bottoming out too early. Depending on a variety of factors this can either result in fat shots or thin ones. As an alternative, pressing into the front foot as you take the club back very definitely forces a steeper approach to the ball and should result in fewer topped shots. It also results in a lower trajectory since it de-lofts the club, and this may give you greater run on certain kinds of fairways.

The second point is that Stack and Tilt promotes a flatter swing. A flatter swing is less vertical and more rotational, and is the way Stack and Tilt compensates for being more on top of the ball when the downswing is begun.

The third point is the fairly advanced idea of the "pelvic thrust" which the Stack and Tilt teachers claim helps get the club approaching the ball correctly. This is probably where Stack and Tilt becomes too difficult for many average golfers. With Stack and Tilt, since one's weight and shoulder position are forward, the approach to the ball will be significantly steeper than normal. The pelvic thrust, along with the more rotational swing, helps to "shallow out" the swing. You achieve this by rapidly rotating your hips around and pushing your front hip up and towards the target. This creates the sensation of almost jumping up and striking the ball while on your toes. If you've ever seen Natalie Golbus swing a golf club you've got a fairly good idea what this looks like.

If these seem like technical points that are beyond your level of expertise, just give the "weight forward" idea a try. All you have to do is start with noticeably more weight on your front foot, and then press into that foot as you take the club up. You will probably find that it feels quite different from what you are used to. This move should result in fewer thin hits. But it may also result in more pushes, especially with the longer clubs, so you may have to adjust the positioning of the ball. You may also find it more physically taxing - requiring more body contortions - and for most of us that is not a good thing.

The saga of hypnosis is as old as the human species. Even the most unsophisticated brutes were aware of this remarkable psychological display, and it was utilized in the mystical procedures of their miracle workers to develop anxiety and intensify faith in the paranormal and the occult. With this sustained history of supernaturalism and mysticism, it is not shocking that the overall public attitude toward hypnosis has been and still is one of antagonism, confusion and fear.

The original scientific presentations in the consideration of hypnosis began with Anton Mesmer in 1775, from whose name originates the expression mesmerism which is even today in modern use. Mesmer`s utilization of hypnosis was made active with his invention that identifiable types of medical patients responded to arm stroking and sleep suggestions. I always find it amusing that the word "gimmick" is slapped on nintendo innovations in gaming while companies like microsoft and Sony who actually add gimmicks that have nothing to do with gaming such as media functions to play music and video never seem to be labeled with the same term

With the unveiling of the Nintendo Revolution controller earlier this year, many people have expressed their skepticism. Some people feel that the controller lacks practically and will not be able to function effectively with games, while more harsh critics believe the controller is nothing more than a gimmick.

The company that tries to improve or innovate gaming is not a "gimmick". A "gimmick" is adding features that have nothing to do with gaming.

The Story of a Re-Invented Golf Widow

One of the great things about golf and especially Womens golf is getting the chance to socialize with like-minded people from all walks of life. Whether its at the driving range - meeting people with friendly hints and tips or on the golf course with your regular foursome. I really enjoy the chance to chill-out and spend some time combining exercise, laughs, the game and the on the green story of the week.

A few weeks ago, one of our foursome who we will name Barb, finally gave up her story of how she got into golf. That may sound boring to you but Barb truly has a story worth sharing. The following is Barbs story and used kindly with her permission.

Setting the scene

Barb and Mike are both busy people, like the rest of us balancing family (two teenagers), work and life in general. Barb runs her own business from home and Mike is a high flying bank executive. Like a lot of us their marriage had had its ups and downs but things felt pretty solid overall. Their kids were starting to be at the age when Mom and dad supplied the free taxi service but other parental guidance was unwelcome.

Mikes obsession begins

Barb and Mike had been married about fifteen years when Mike decided he needed to learn how to play golf for business networking and to reduce the risk of humiliation on corporate golf days.

Barb didnt give much thought to Mikes announcement on golf, there had been many new interests that had faded over the years - the garage was full of most of them. First, along came the endless how-to books followed shortly after by a cheap, value for money ($750) set of second-hand golf clubs.

While Barb worked most evenings to catch up on business, home and the kids activities, Mike on the other hand, spent almost every night obsessively watching the golf DVDs followed by the wild swinging of golf clubs in front of the TV set. This couple had established routines, a nightly catch-up of the days events; this soon became replaced with Mike engrossed in the golf books leaving Barb with the occasional grunt or the enlightening sorry, I didnt hear what you said?

Self assured that the golf clubs would soon be gathering dust in the Garage, Barb carried on with life as usual. The next stage for Mike was to take all his new found research and his great deal golf clubs to the local driving range in the evenings to start applying all these golf theories. Mike was really enjoying going out for a bash and while Barb appreciated his new found interest and the associated health benefits, she also started to feel a bit like she was flying solo.

Barb started to sense a change in Mike in the bedroom a level of interest that she certainly had not seen for a long time. Alas, it was not in Barb but in Mikes new books The Modern Fundamentals of Golf by ben hogan and The Swing Factory. Although, there is nothing like watching a middle-aged half-naked man leap out of bed and start swinging a golf club around to ignite the midnight passions, Barb had to make do with watching and ducking the practice swings.

Mike on the course

Mike finally got his chance to put his new found golf techniques to the test during their Corporate/Client Golf Day. Convinced that he was finally going to show up his colleagues after all this study and practice, he left the house in the morning with a new found swagger promising to share his prizes with the family upon his return.

Alas, what came home was a broken man. Apparently, theory, practice and studied technique had not leant itself to the improvement of Mikes on course game. The family rallied and tried to find ways to boost up their fallen hero. Barb was sympathetic and applied all her well practiced motivational techniques. Within half an hour, unfortunately, it had worked! The family three plus golfer then spent the evening going through a stroke by stroke, swing by swing replay of the days events.

Two days later when Barb called it quits for the evening and headed for bed, she was shocked to find a new piece of equipment had joined the bedroom furniture. Diving out of the way of a swinging club she found that Mike had brought the driving range home to the bedroom in the form of a practice mat complete with attached balls! Barbs confidence in the passing fad theory started to feel a little shaken.

Shaken became diminished when now not only evenings were spent at the driving range but weekends too. New DVDs appeared, downloaded golf articles swamped the computer and finally Mike announced that the family had a new member in the form of a Golf Coach reasonably priced of course. Mike now spent evenings and weekends at the driving range and his lunch times with his Golf Coach.

Now picture this, you run a business from home, your companions apart from the odd drop in visitor or business meeting, are the cat and the rabbit who either want feeding or cleaning. At the end of the day when your family come home, you go into Super Chick mode of gratifying gripes, trying to cook a dinner that suits over 50% of the family, nagging about homework, trying not to look like a dried out dish towel and counseling on the numerous major issues and broken friendships facing your teenagers. That is in-between answering phone calls and being responsive to business emails. In the evenings your teenagers are absorbed in some form of electronic communication and you spend your time ducking swings, tripping over golf clubs and trying to chill out watching Tiger Woods or some other form of golf professional on TV.

Mikes second major chance to show his golf prowess finally comes around. The family not forgetting the last devastation, all rallies and cheers like a manic pep rally as their hero drives off to conquer the course. Once more, their fallen hero returns shocked, dismayed and completely lost as to why his driving range success cannot translate to fairways, greens and little round hole. Barb is now sure that Mike will return to her and that the golf clubs; books, DVDs, balls and practice mat will find their place amongst the other forgotten pursuits.

The next day Mike came home with an announcement, he had fired the Golf Coach and he had discovered why he wasnt doing well on the course it was his golf clubs. His new customized set would be arriving in three weeks, which would make all the difference to his game. During the next few months, the new golf clubs arrived which then required a new mallet putter, which then required a new fairway wood to complete the set, well apart from the hybrids, new golf bag, different golf shoes, cap, shirts and the list went on right through Mikes birthday, Fathers Day and Christmas. By this time most conversations eventually ended up discussing golf although Barb had never held a golf stick in her hand, she was pretty much able to describe the intricacies of the game, especially the swing.

After Christmas it came time to plan the familys yearly summer holiday, nearly everyone voted for the beach, however, Mike did not seem as keen as earlier years. In April, Mike announced that he might not be able to make the holiday as he was busy at work. By this time Barb had serious concerns about where not only the family were heading but were her and Mike were heading as a couple. The irony was now that the kids were growing up and more independent they had more free time, only Mikes was spent at golf and Barbs was spent on her own.

May came with a final holiday destination decision that after a successful year in her business, Barb would take the girls to Spice Island in the Caribbean. This would probably be the last true family holiday together, as Barbs eldest would also be off to College in the fall. Barb decided it was time to talk to Mike about how important the holiday was for the family and was delighted when he agreed to move around his commitments and come along.

The final straw

The first day of the family holiday was wonderful with everyone enjoying the Resort and the beach. However, on the second day Mike started to get fidgety and Barb wondered why? She got her answer when she saw Mike talking to the tour desk about the Golf that was available and like a true junky, where he could borrow some clubs. One day later Barb was on the beach on her own, the girls were off exploring together and her beloved Mike was yet again at the driving range.

Barb told us it was the absolute worst feeling being in such a beautiful place with the feeling that she was old news to the rest of her family. She knew she had to do something to try and turn things around. Now in all fairness to Mike, he had been asking Barb for sometime to join him on the golf range, it just hadnt appealed to Barb and her confidence of starting to learn a new sport at her age was pretty low.

Saving Barb and Mike

Barb decided that the first step to putting things straight was to get her and Mike to spend some time together. If that had to be at the driving range then thats how it would be. The next day at breakfast to Mikes surprise, Barb announced she was joining him. She described to us the complete reassurance she felt when she saw the smile on Mikes face. That day another great surprise happened in that Barb found that she actually enjoyed connecting with the little white ball and that her distance was pretty good for a complete novice to the game.

Over the next six months, Barb like Mike before her (although in a more controlled and less obsessed way) came to really enjoy learning the game and techniques for getting the little white ball much further than before. Barb described how things started to change in her life. Finally, she had found something that got her away from home/work and through attending golf workshops she met other women who played during the week. Through golf her social networks have grown and now Mike and Barb not only spend more time together but also spend more time socializing with their fellow golf buddies.

Our conversation happened five years down the track and in that time Barb has become an excellent golfer and through her golf found a more balanced approach to life, home and her relationship. Barb still plans the summer getaways, but now its her who looks for places to stay where they can play golf and still enjoy their surrounds. Ironically, it is now Mike who tries to make sure they spend quality time together in-between Barbs work and golf commitments.

For the rest of us, this was an amazing insight into a lady we had been playing golf with for years without ever realizing how this talented golfer came to be.

Yogic breathing techniques (Pranayama) are highly underrated by the public at large. Among the many powers of Pranayama is the ability to release anger and tension from within your body and mind. Yoga teachers guide their students in a number of Pranayama techniques.

Here is a sample of a Pranayama technique, which you can use for anger management. inhale for four seconds, hold for seven seconds, and exhale for eight seconds. Do this four times, without making any noise, before you say a word.

You should learn to do this so quietly, a person standing next to you would not know. Eventually, you will be able to do this for a much longer time span, which is fine. The one to two ratio of inhale to exhale will expel your anger and rid your body of toxins.

This breathing pattern is sometimes called the 4-7-8 breath, but it can also be modified for people who can not breathe as deep. For example: You can modify this Pranayama to - inhale for two seconds, hold for four seconds, and exhale for four seconds.

This breathing sequence is a 2-4-4 breath. The one to two ratio of inhale to exhale has still been maintained, but the sequence has been modified for those who have a shallow breath. When possible, the breath can be lengthened as the lungs get used to harnessing the air flow.

Extended breath retention may have to be modified to meet your needs. In the case of dizziness, pregnancy, high blood pressure, and breathing disorders, you should consult with a physician before practicing breathing techniques.

Find And Maintain Your Perfect weight: The Yoga of Mindful Eating

A common experience, among those who have practiced some form of yoga (or qigong or meditation) for a sustained period of time, is the experience of having ones weight stabilize, and maintain itself ~ almost magically ~ at the perfect level. This has certainly been my experience Regardless of what I eat (and granted, my diet is, my most standards, quite a healthy one), my weight has appeared, over many years, to fluctuate no more than a couple of pounds in either direction. I dont have scientific proof of this, since I almost never weigh myself on a scale but it is my perception, which Ive grown to trust. Basically, I feel comfortable in my body, and most of the time what I want to eat is what my body needs After Ive eaten what I have desired, I feel nourished, satisfied, and energized by those choices.

But this sort of natural equilibrium, around weight and food choices, for most people takes a while to cultivate. So, in the meantime, what to do about this eating thing? This body-weight thing? Based upon advice Ive received, over the years and from people I trust, Id like to present two practices: one very simple (in terms of its mechanics, at least); the other a bit more involved. What they have in common is this: youre not required to change WHAT you eat, in any way. Sound intriguing? read on !

The first practice, designed specifically for those who would be healthier & happier if they weighed less than they do now, is to follow one simple rule, which is: dont eat anything after 5 p.m. This is a strategy that was transmitted to me by one of my teachers (herself a yogini, in the Sikh tradition) in Chinese medical school. What she noticed was that, almost universally, those patients of hers who were able to do this one thing, did indeed lose the weight that they needed to, without doing anything else. The explanation for this (common to both the Chinese and the ayurvedic medical models) is that our digestive fire is hottest at high noon, and from there begins its daily descent reaching its low point at around midnight. To be in alignment with this natural cycle of our digestive system, its best to eat our largest meal at around noon, and definitely to avoid those fashionably late dinners, or midnight snacks. Now actually doing this may require some inconvenient if not downright painful (emotionally, socially) shifts & changes in your habitual eating patterns But if youre able to work through that piece of it, its a very simple thing!

A more involved meal-time practice ~ which still does not require you to change what you eat (though over time, this may indeed, and quite naturally, begin to happen) ~ is to bring a new level of mindfulness to the entire eating process. This sort of practice begins with the commitment to simply eat, when youre eating, i.e. to avoid meal-time multi-tasking (you know: reading the paper, checking you email or voice messages, driving the kids to school at the same time as youre having breakfast, lunch or dinner). Then, once you have your food on your plate, to pause for a moment or two to consider where the food has come from: to think of all the plants, minerals, animals and human beings without whom this food would not be here in front of you. So to remember: the farm-workers, the sunshine & minerals which were food to the plants that youre about to consume, the plants which were food to the animals youre about to consume, the workers in the supermarket and in the slaughterhouse As we deepen this practice, we come to understand that the food were about to consume could not be here were it not for the entire universe! Then we say a prayer, of acknowledgement and of gratitude, for what were about to consume. This could be anything that youd like it to be. A traditional prayer from the Hindu tradition is as follows (first in transliterated Sanskrit, then the english translation):

brahmaarpaNaM brahma haviH brahmaagnau brahmaNaa hutam.h . brahmaiva tena gantavyaM brahmakarmasamaadhinaa ..

A process of offering is Brahman, the oblation is Brahman, the instrument of offering is Brahman, the fire to which the offering is made is also Brahman. For such a one who abides in Brahman, by him alone Brahman is reached.

The essential message of this prayer is: we and the food and the process of eating & drinking are all made of the same stuff and as we come, directly, to realize this, we and our food and our entire world is revealed as Divine (Brahman). In other words: you are God, eating food which is God, which is digested by God, and if you really get this, you will have reached God!

So now ~ at long last! ~ we take our first bite and chew it long enough to really taste it, and perhaps even long enough to notice how the taste changes as the food begins to break down in our mouths. And we allow ourselves to notice: is this an enjoyable or less-than-enjoyable taste? And allow ourselves to enjoy the whole process and to marvel at its miracle: at some point (where exactly is that point?) this food ceases to be food and becomes part of my body!

These sorts of mindfulness of eating practices are a potent way of waking up the bodys own intelligence and as such, are likely, over the long run, to have balancing and stabilizing affects on all of our physical (as well as emotional and spiritual) systems. Give it a try and bon appetit!

When considering arcade games the first thought that comes to mind is Fun! The second is childhood. Arcade Games loomed large in childhood, but for many of us those golden years have never really ended! The 1980s are considered by many to be the golden age of arcade games. This is largely because this is the time that gave birth to the genre, so it has a very real air of both innovation and innocence about it in terms of the games that came out of that period. The dedicated gaming machines tend to have better playability and graphics, but for now at least the games on the computer platforms tend to have much larger community bases (World of Warcraft for example). Those who know me know that I like my cell phones! It should not come as a shock to learn that I finally broke down and purchased the iphone. I resisted as long as I could (and longer than my family imagined), but in the end, the curiosity got the best of me. I have to say, it was a revealing experience. Many news reports detailed long lines and activation hassles; I experienced no such trouble.

My boys and I bought the iphone at the local apple store. Despite moderate Sunday traffic we managed to get in and out of the store pretty quickly. apple has set sales up to be a relatively painless experience. You buy the phone and activate it by hooking it up to your computer at home Their music software, (iTunes), takes care of the rest. I must admit, it was really cool and took less than 10 minutes when we got home. It was intuitive, easy to follow. And there were no complications.

More importantly, the cell phone buying experience wasnt like the normal trip to the wireless store that Ive experienced before, Ive written about wireless carriers before Often, the buying experience is far from fun, and returning to a store to fix a problem has the same kind of dread as going to the dentist. To hit the Grand Slam with your customers (and associates) it is essential that you motivate the buyers and make buying from you fun. Get this right and your customers will return again and again.

Here are a few tips to help you motivate and make it fun for your customers and associates.

1) Keep things simple!
By creating a simple activation procedure that customers can do in the comfort of their homes, apple greatly enhanced the retail experience. After spending 10 minutes activating my new iphone, I dont understand why it should take so long in a wireless store. Many times I have watched disinterested, unmotivated associates dutifully enforce ridiculous rules and policies. Instead of helping eager customers hand over $500 for their new devices, Apples associates would be helping people sync their address books. You choose what seems like more fun!

3) Generate a light atmosphere!
Just walk into an apple store and you will know what I mean. The stores are bright (the lighting is perfect), and there is music playing throughout. The Apple associates always seem to be enjoying their work. I realize that ones enjoyment at work has a lot to do with the product being sold and how popular it is; however, theres more to it. Apple works hard to remove obstacles that might otherwise impede their associates enjoyment. For example, lines at check-out are stressful for both customers and associates. Apples associates have little hand-held devices that act as cash registers for those paying with credit cards. This makes things go very smoothly.

For many years, I was the President and owner of one of the countrys most popular wine stores. I always tried to maintain a light mood as I knew the companys psyche would rise and fall with my own attitude. It wasnt always easy; however, I always tried to maintain an easy-going style. Apple has hit the Grand Slam with their easy, delightful process. now, if you will excuse me, Im loading some Barbra Streisand on the new phone!

Improve Your Golf Game on the Back Nine

All the major tournaments, especially the U.S. open and the PGA, are a true test of endurance. They are usually located in a part of the country where it is hot, humid and muggy. A real physical and mental drain on any golfer.

Look who has been winning the Majors in the last couple of years: Phil Mickelson, tiger Woods and Vijay Singh. They have incredible endurance. It doesnt come by accident. They work at it.

Endurance is a word that is commonly associated with athletes such as marathon runners, tri-athletes, swimmers, and cyclists.

Granted, the majority of amateurs use a cart to play. This takes the walking part of the game out of the equation. Bit when most golfers break down, it has more to do with the endurance of the swing muscles than the walking part.

Think of endurance as the ability to perform the same activity over and over for an extended amount of time at max effort and peak performance. Relating this definition to, say, a marathon runner becomes pretty easy. A marathon runner, for example, has to have the cardiovascular (blood and oxygen) endurance to run 26 miles at a steady pace. In addition to having the cardiovascular endurance to run 26 miles, a marathoner needs to also have the endurance in their muscular system to again run 26 miles. If they do not, the body begins to give up and this is seen in the form of cramping, muscles not responding, and the body hitting the wall as many marathoners call it.

Endurance as it applies to the golf swing and the ability to perform the swing correctly is different than the intensity of running a marathon. But the underlying theme when it comes to endurance is the same. Swinging a golf club is a repetitive, explosive movement performed by the body. The muscles are active from address, back swing, transition, contact, and follow through in the same motor pattern every time you swing a club (or at least they should be; for some of us amateurs the swing path changes from time to time, but that is a subject for another article). Anyways, to perform the golf swing efficiently and effectively for an extended period of time (like 4 rounds of tournament golf) the muscles involved in the golf swing are required to have a certain level of endurance developed within them to sustain the swing.

Do you have enough gas in the tank?

It is essentially having enough gas in your tank to swing a club a given number of times. Now I referred to a four-day tournament, which is the average number of days a PGA tour event lasts, but when it comes to endurance and golf swing the number of swings in a tournament is only the beginning. Remember the definition of endurance is the ability of the body to perform a certain movement over and over for a given period of time. In relation to the golf swing and endurance we must also include a time frame. Let us first begin with looking at a typical four-day tournament. At the very least, we need enough endurance in the muscles that swing a club to hit all the shots from tee to green in 72 holes of golf. On top of just the tournament play you must add the additional practice time before or after the round. This could comprise anywhere from 2-3 hours of additional time swinging a club. Now, at this point we are just talking about a single tournament for a tour player.

Let us expand this time period to 7 days. A 7-day time frame for a tour player would consist of a 4-day tournament (Thursday through Sunday) in addition to 3 additional days in the week. Realize that those three other days during week are not rest days, but rather filled with work. First off, you have Wednesday, which, at most tournaments, is when the pro-am is scheduled. If you are unaware of what a pro-am is on tour, it is a round of golf usually held on Wednesday where each pro in the upcoming tournament is paired with three amateurs for a round of golf. So we can chalk this up to another round of golf. This again would comprise all the golf swing made during the round and any practice before and after.

We are up to Wednesday through Sunday of a tour week. Now what about Monday and Tuesday of a tour week? I would guess that it would be safe to say that probably most players take Monday off, not always, but most of the time. Tuesday is a whole different story. Tuesday is a practice day where a pro could spend 4 to 6 hours at the range, putting and chipping. The number of swings taken on Tuesday can be huge!

So there you have it, a full week on tour with an idea of the number of swings taken by a tour player over a 7-day time frame. Now take this number of swings and multiply it out over an entire season where an average player will participate in 25 tournaments. The numbers get really big looking at it from this perspective. I imagine at this point the connection between endurance and the golf swing has been made. It essentially comes down to this: to swing the club effectively on the correct path over an extended period of time, you need to develop endurance in your muscular system specific to golf. The next question to present is how do you do that?

Developing Endurance Specific to the golf Swing

So how do you develop endurance in the muscles that are used in the golf swing? You can not really do it by running or doing the Stair master at your local health club. The reason why? These types of exercises are great for developing cardiovascular endurance and developing some musculature endurance in the legs, but they do not work all the muscles involved in the golf swing. And they certainly do not create endurance in these muscles in relation to how they are used to swing a club.

The methodology that is required to develop endurance in the golf swing requires you to perform what I call cross specificity exercises specific to the movements and positions in which the body placed during the swing. The result of this type of training is what we term a transfer-of-training effect. A transfer-of-training effect is where the exercises performed in your training program improve the performances on the field of competition. Field of competition, when it comes to golf, pertains to the golf course and your swing. So invariably we need to develop what I term golf endurance through exercises that are cross specific to the golf swing with the outcome of a transfer-of-training effect to golf swing.

Within the last decade, do-it-yourself home improvement projects have become more and more popular, as people have realized they do not always need professionals to complete a job for them. One area where this is especially true is with plumbing installation of drains in your home, particularly with sinks.

Most sinks in your home can be found in either your bathroom or your kitchen, thus you will most likely be installing sink drains in one of these two areas. If you are doing drain plumbing installation in the kitchen you will use a 1-1/2" drain, while in a bathroom you will most likely use 1-1/4". Usually the drain will be made from PVC plastic, but some older drains are brass and chrome.

In addition, if your kitchen or bathroom has two sinks that need to drain, you will need to purchase a T-junction to allow both sinks to empty water into the same drain.

Once you have the pieces of pipes you need for your specific drain, the plumbing installation is a breeze. You simply need to connect your pipes together, and then utilize washers and bolts to connect the pipes between the sink and the floor or wall drain. You can also utilize pipe thread compound when putting PVC drain pipes together. It acts as a lubricant initially and helps you to fit the pipes together. It then turns into a seal and prevent erosion of the pipe from all the water.

Of course when buying your pipe and doing the plumbing installation, it is important that you invest in good pipe and quality workmanship. The pipe should be strong enough to withstand pressure from water and not burst, and it should be strong enough to not break when getting bumped or kicked due to its location under the sink. GTA IV Provokes Politicians Already

Grand Theft Auto has always been a franchise that likes to bathe itself in controversy, shower itself off in heated debate and deodorize in wild accusations. Whether it is the intentionally amoral gameplay or the amazingly unsexy "hot coffee" debacle, gta has proved time and time again that there's no such thing as bad publicity.

Gamers on both the PlayStation 3 and xbox 360 are eagerly awaiting the latest instalment in the gta series later this year, and when the real sequel to gta III, the amazingly-named gta IV launches (there have been several spin-offs since gta III, such as Liberty City Stories, etc). The web was alive with downloaders recently when RockStar finally allowed gamers their first peak at the game in the shape of a teaser trailer.

Within hours though, while gamers dissected the footage, politicians leapt in to criticize. What were they criticizing? The fictional setting, Liberty City, which resembles New York. A lot. City politicians were aghast at the idea of a piece of fiction portraying violence on the streets on New York, apparently being ignorant of pretty much the entire work of Martin Scorsese.

"Setting Grand Theft Auto in the safest big city in America would be like setting halo in Disneyland," said City Councilman Peter Vallone, chairman of the Council's Public Safety Committee to The New York Daily news. He's not the only one to have a go, either. Spotting an opportunity to look good, a spokesman for the mayor had a go too: "The mayor does not support any video game where you earn points for injuring or killing police officers."

Oddly though, New York City hasn't seemed to have had a problem with movie companies setting their violent and action thrillers in the city, with roads closed for the Die hard 3 film, for example. Had RockStar turned up with millions of dollars in order to shoot the city for textures for the games, would there have been praise galore for the realism the game offered?

All of this criticism, of course, ignore the whole "it's fiction" nature of the game which leads to the question of whether future novelists, film makers, animators, artists and games companies will be asked not to show the city with any violence in it. Because fiction has to reflect reality apparently, somewhat destroying the point of fiction.

As to the trailer itself, there's not a hint of violence. It's undeniable that the game features a fictionalised version of NYC. As the GTA IV preview in P3Zine, the free PlayStation 3 magazine shows, but already game commentators are theorizing that gta IV will feature more realism and less violence without repercussions, as RockStar has supposedly been talking to ex-cops about how much harder organised crime is to get away with these days.

RockStar has repeatedly pushed gta IV with the tagline "Things will be different" a phrase echoed by the main character in the trailer, but it appears that criticism of the franchise is not going to any different this time around, starting before the game has even appeared. It's unlikely to damage sales. Even in NYC.

After the release of the Xbox and ps2, in the highly competitive world of video gaming consoles it appears like nintendo was pushed out of the game. Now, with the brand new xbox 360 and the soon to be released ps3, nintendo needs to definitely do something cool in order to keep up with the 2 giants that are leading the game so far. Nintendos answer to this situation is the in-development-stages Nintendo Wii. Hopefully, this will be a console capable of competing with xbox 360 and PS3. Will Wii really manage to give nintendo a breath of relief? Well, only time can show.

Nintedo Wii has been in development for quite some time now. The initial name of the project was nintendo Revolution but later on, the guys at nintendo decided to change its name to Wii (its pronounced we). The console itself is a black (it can also come in other colors, thats a common practice by Nintendo), sleek, rectangular box with a blue, beautiful, LED illuminated slot-receiver. The exterior follows the concept keep it simple and effective and its completely different from the flashy xbox 360.

Leaving the eye-candy aside now, lets talk about the actual features of the Wii console. First of all, nintendo promised that the Wii will bring a whole new gaming experience upon its arrival. part of the implementation of this plan is a small controller that comes along with Wii. Although it appears just like a simple TV controller, it contains motion sensors; this feature will be utilized in various gameplay aspects. For example, Titles such as legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Red Steel take advantage of the new controller technology in order to provide the player with an effective way to aim.

Regarding interior hardware aspects of the Wii, what we know by the moment is that it will be equipped with an IBM CPU, an ATI graphics card and a RAM memory of 512MB. Of course, it features wireless controllers, 2 usb ports and a built in antennae for WiFi internet access. Saddly for those who consider it a must, Wii will not support HD output but it still has the potential to look pretty good on a HDTV due to its wide screen friendly mode and the 480p progressive scan.

The last thing to add is that Wii features an amazing backwards compatibility feature. You can play literally any game that nintendo has ever produced. Yes, even retro games! Finally, another good thing about the Wii is that it will come at a very affordable price; according to Nintendo it is going to cost something less than 250$!
